In this section an overview is presented of the meetings held since 2004.
Report of the Virus Division Business Meeting
August 17, 2009, Park City, Utah, USA
The Virus Division Business Meeting was attended by 35 members. The meeting was chaired by the Chair Bryony Bonning, and the Secretary/Treasurer Kelli Hoover recorded the meeting minutes.

In addition, the division sponsored one cross-divisional symposium and a workshop
There were 30 contributed oral presentations 10 of which were student presentations. There were 32 poster presentations, of which 4 were student presentations.
Hands-On Cell Culture Workshop
The division also organized a pre-meeting cell culture workshop “Methods for Developing Insect Cell Lines: A Laboratory Workshop” for hands on training provided by Dr. Dwight Lynn. The workshop was held at a Utah Valley University Wasatch Campus facility, close to the SIP meeting site. This workshop has been received with enthusiasm with 19 participants enrolled. Proceeds from this workshop were used to pay for Dr. Lynn’s attendance of the SIP meeting, workshop supplies, and facility rental with the remainder going toward the Virus Division fund.
Membership:
In 2009 there were 96 regular members and 10 student members.

-
A third motion was made to raise the regular virus division membership fee to $15 and keep the student membership fee at $2. After a second, a vote was taken and the motion passed by the majority.
Student Report:
Ikbal Agah Ince provided this report:
The students came up with some suggestions that require further discussion or implementation, as follows:
1. Prepare invitation letters for SIP meetings to students that clarifies the advantages of holding student membership in SIP. This letter could be posted on the website or a hardcopy invitation letter sent to possible candidates.
2. Organization of student activities that are attractive to students should be required at SIP Meetings, e.g organizing short-term courses with no fee for student members
3. Provide a membership certificate for students who ask for it.
4. We also discussed with student council members the idea of holding a special session where specific people (probably 3) are invited from outside or within the SIP Society to have a 30 or 45 min coffee with students to talk about their life/career experience. The students can be divided into three groups and allowed to choose the speaker they would like to have coffee with.
5. Create a mail group for facilitating information flow (Job offers, courses, etc.)
Student travel awards
Ten applications were submitted for student travel awards to the Virus Division. The Virus division awarded two travel awards at $650 each to Jianli Xue and Agah Ince. The Virus Division’s top travel award winner, Karolin Eberle, was nominated for and received the Martignoni award.
Discussion followed on whether preference for student travel awards should go to students whom have not yet received the award. The consensus was that this should be at the discretion of the division chair, but that we should still rank the students so that a student who had previously received a travel award from our division is still eligible to be nominated for the Martignoni award.

Thanks
to the Society’s Speaker Fund and Division dues, the Virus Division organized
and sponsored one cross-division symposium “Invertebrate Responses to
Pathogens” co-chaired by Jim Maruniak (virus) and Christina Nielsen-LeRoux
(bacteria); two division symposia: 1) “Polydnaviruses and Ascoviruses” (4
speakers) and 2) “Insect Expression Systems, Gene Therapy and Vaccine
Development” (4 speakers); five contributed paper sessions (40 presentations);
one workshop on “Microarray Technology, Genomics and Proteomics in
Entomopathogen Research”; 35 virus posters and contributions to the Immunity
session and Microbial Control session.
Membership
There
are 120 dues paying members in 2005, an increase of 24 over 2004. There are
108 regular members (17 more) paying $10 and 12 students (7 more than 2004)
paying $2.
Student
Travel Grants
There
were 10 applicants for the Virus Division student travel grants judged by three
members of the Division including executive committee members. The Virus
Division awarded two travel grants of $500 each to Jondavid de Jong from
University of Guelph, Ontario and to Elizabeth Kemp from University of Reading, Warwick. The Virus Division reviewed and voted for the student travel applications
for the Martignoni Award (Stephen Wraight, chair) and the Microbial Control
(Jeff Lord, chair) travel award.
2006
and Future Symposia
A
cross-divisional symposium on “Host/Pathogen Population Dynamics” is planned
for the 2006 annual meeting in China. Two symposia approved by the Virus
Division are “Diseases of Aquatic Invertebrates” organized by Just Vlak and
“Field Performance of Insect Viruses” organized by Rose Hu.
Additional
future titles on our “master list” of symposia topics include Virus/Host
Interactions, Entomopoxviruses versus Vertebrate Poxviruses: comparative
pathology and genomics, Cell Culture: Serial Passage Effects and Virus
Production, Emerging Diseases of Invertebrates, and Insect Genomics (Cross
Division Symposium). Contact Jim Maruniak if you would like to participate in
organizing a Virus Division Symposium.
It
was decided that there would not be a Virus Division workshop at the 2006 SIP
meeting.
Basil
Arif suggested a visit of the Virology Institute in Wuhan for members of the
Virus Division. More information will be sent at a later time about the
details of the tour.

meeting was chaired by the Virus Division Chair John Burand, and the
Secretary/Treasurer Jim Slavicek recorded the meeting minutes.
Summary of Virus Division activity at the Helsinki meetings
This year the Society organized a symposium on the history of SIP and
Basil Arif was kind enough to agree to speak on the history of Virus Division
in this symposium. In addition, the Virus Division organized and sponsored: 2
division symposia, 1 cross-division symposia, 1 workshop. 25 contributed papers
2 of which are student papers 28 posters at least 3 of which are student
posters.
Membership
The increase in dues went into full effect this year We have 96 dues
paying members. This includes 91 regular members paying $10 (The same as last
year) and 5 students paying $2.
Student Travel Grant
This will be the fourth year the Division has presented the annual
student award, with entries judged by the Division's Executive Committee. This
year because of the quality of the applications and with the funds provided by
the council three Virus Division Student Travel Awards of $500 each will be
presented. This year’s winners are: Hirokazu Shikata, Ayako Hirao and Aki
Fujimoto all three from the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology.
2004 Symposia
As in the past, Symposia for this year's meeting were selected by
discussion and vote at the 2003 Business Meeting. The Division continues to maintain
an updated list of topics, from which Symposia titles are selected each year.
This year the Virus Division combined with the Microbial Control Division to
organize a symposium entitled: Oryctes virus - from discovery to classical
microbial control agent. The Division also organized a symposium on virus
ecology and on the role of native immune systems and molecular host response.
Thanks to the Society's Speaker Fund, we were able to support several of the
speakers in these sessions.
Possible Symposia Topics for 2005
A considerable amount of time was spent discussing possible topics for
next year’s symposium. The members of the Virus Division decided to organize a
cross-divisional symposium on Host/Pathogen Population Dynamics and three
divisional symposia. The topics chosen were Insect Expression Systems, gene
therapy and vaccine development, PolyDNA Viruses/Ascoviruses and Field
Performance of Insect Viruses. However, a symposium on Virus/Host Interactions
may be organized 2005 or possibly 2005. Jim Maruniak will work to clarify this
issue. Virus Division members were encouraged to contact Jim Maruniak if they
would like to participate in organizing a Virus Division Symposium. Peter Krell
volunteered to organize the PolyDNAViruses/Ascoviruses Symposium.
