Member fee 2007 Currently 2 USD Amount allocated for student travel grant(s): 750 USD in total Amount for use for a non-SIP sympsium: 1000 USD Additional money for a non-SIP speaker at a cross divisional symposim: $500 (US)
Don Roberts made a motion that the Division dues be increased to $5.00 (US) Mike Brownbridge seconded the motion. Discussion followed regarding the purpose of the increase. It was suggested that the increase be used for student travel awards because the Society funds are not permanent. The vote yielded 11 for, 6 against, and 1 abstaining. The Secretary was asked to check the By-Laws to make sure the Division can regulate it’s own dues.
SIP Annual Meeting in Wuhan 2006
Fungus Division Symposium: Ecology of Entomophthorales (Ming Guang Feng). Invited speakers were Judith Pell, Ann Hajek, Ming Guang Feng and Jørgen Eilenberg.
Contributed papers: 23, in three sessions. Posters: 21 In addition, several papers for the MCD as well as for cross divisional symposia included fungi.
Roy Bateman expressed concern that the Symposium Travel Awards not be given to people who were non-members only because they had forgotten to register and pay dues. The Travel Award should be for people who are not regularly attending members in an attempt to bring them into the society. Jeff Lord expressed concern that they will be charged non-member registration fees, and Mark Goettel said that the organizing committee usually waives the registration fee for these invited speakers.
Web Site Development: A web-site was set up during this year by Paresh Shah, Rothamsted, UK, with support from Peg Rothstein. Special thanks was given to Paresh Shah for his assistance with the web page.
CD: Charlotte Nielsen, KVL, initiated work to compile a set of slides on insect pathogenic fungi for a cd or to be uploaded onto the web-site. At the Anchorage meeting, the Division discussed concerns about copyrights, an issue which needs to be resolved. Charlotte Nielson suggested people only send in images that have no copyrights, and reiterated that the photos will only be available for Division members. She has received only 15 photos and asked how to proceed. Roy Bateman and Dietrich Stephens volunteered to help Charlotte approach people for more photo donations. The Chair appointed Charlotte, Roy, and Dietrich as a committee to put together a slide project.
Glossary: The Division was happy to recommend Richard Humber and Vladimir Gouli to help with review the Insect Pathology Glossary.
Fungus Genome Projects: The Chair and Secretary presented reports from two people who are working on genomes of entomopathogenic fungi, but who could not attend the meeting. Nemat Keyhani, Univ Florida, USA, et al., reported: ‘The Hypocrealean Project which included sequencing both Metarhizium and Beauveria was not funded this time around. I might, however, resubmit the Beauveria sequencing project to NSF in January. Concerning genome resources: two papers describing EST datasets from Beauveria bassiana from my lab are in press in the journal Microbiology and should be out in the Sept or Oct issue.’ Katherine Aronstein, USDA-ARS, TX, USA, reported: 'The draft sequence of Ascosphaera apis genome was produced using a Whole Genome Shotgun (WGS) approach by sequencing both ends of the inserts from a plasmid library, prepared by Baylor Sequencing Center. A total of over 156 Mb of high quality bases was produced and assembled into contigs that totaled 21.6 Mb in length, which represents about 7x fungal genome coverage. The two A. apis isolates used in the genome sequencing project have been deposited in the USDA-ARSEF collection (Murray et al., 2005). The term date of this project was extended for another year to finish sequencing of the second A. apis mating type isolate.
Fernando Vega will begin as chair at the end of this meeting, but he was not able to come to Wuhan, so he sent a greeting that was read at the meeting. He requested members to send him ideas on symposia for the next SIP meeting, but also symposia ideas for the International Congress of Entomology to be held in July of 2008 in Durban, South Africa.
Enquiry on fungus isolate:
Jørgen Eilenberg, KVL, Copenhagen, Denmark, et al. asked members about data on one specific isolate of Metarhizium anisopliae, Ma43. The aim is to collect information about this isolate, which has been important in many studies. Responses from members were obtained and the work is in progress.

Symposia Suggestions for 2007
Parwinder Grewal - EPNs on turfgrass insects (to be confirmed) Rick Brandenburg - Fungi for the control of turfgrass insects: An overview (confirmed) Callie Prater - Virus for the control of turfgrass insects: Current situation (confirmed) Albrecht Koppenhöfer - EPNs with other control agents, particularly synergistic combinations (confirmed) Louis Simard and Guy Bélair - Biological control on turfgrass insects in Canada-Current situation (confirmed)
Other Business The Chair expressed concern that too much overlap exists between FD and MCD. For example, many papers at SIP meetings deal with biocontrol using fungi. The Chair asked if our division should make a greater effort to attract people working with insect pathogenic fungi in areas other than biocontrol, for example, in the areas of • Fungi on honey bees • Fungi on aquatic insects • Fungi producing biomedicine (Cordyceps)
Roy Batemen requested that people please renew their memberships, and announced that he had membership forms.
Mark Goettel had a question from the Society Organizing Meeting for members of the Division. Do people mind if the Plenary Session overlaps with Division talks? Should the meeting start each day with a plenary session? Also, do we want more cross-divisional symposia, or more plenary sessions? These ideas were discussed. It was generally expressed that Plenary sessions are well liked, and no other sessions should be concurrent with Plenary sessions.
The meeting was adjourned.
